Home Based Care - Home Based Education

To preview this course, visit https://goo.gl/TmMswD Home Based Care. Home based care is aimed at family carers lookng after a loved one with dementia. Educators who are interested in providing a ‘social learning’ course for this cohort can use this course to empower and inform family carers about a series of issues that will challenge them as they navigate their care journey. The course was developed for an Irish audience and some parts of it contain information for an Irish audience. Educators from different jurisdictions are advised to edit these sections as appropriate. The course has an Induction and Orientation week followed by six weeks of materials covering a range of topics including: what is dementia and changes in relationships, communications and behaviour changes, personal care in a safe environment and very importantly caring for the carer. Course materials are contained in: ‘Books’ which themselves contain a mixture of text, videos and video presentations ‘Forums’ which ask participants to answer a series of open ended questions designed to promote the development of a community of learners ‘Choice’ which asks participants to answer a simple question designed to let the group get to know each other ‘Feedback’ seeks weekly feedback from participants on their learner experience ‘Assignment’ offers participants an opportunity to upload a reflective care delivery action plan ‘Quiz’ in the final part of the course asks participants to answer a series of multiple choice questions and is designed to demonstrate knowledge retention

Organisations are requested to contact fergus.timmons@alzheimer.ie if they plan to deliver this course. Organisations are strongly advised to study the accompanying Quality Framework User’s Guide which outlines how to plan for course delivery through a series of specific questions on a range of issues.

We recommend a class size of 15 participants per cohort.  The course must be facilitated by a tutor as it strongly promotes collaboration and sharing of carers’ experiences through moderated discussion forums. The course also promotes self-reflection and asks participants to complete and upload a weekly care delivery action plan. For these reasons, the tutor should be subject matter expert on dementia, should be trained on how to use Moodle and should be trained on moderating forums.
